Frank J. Michalski, Ph.D. Diagnostic Virology Laboratory MetPath One Malcolm Avenue Teterboro, New Jersey 07608 Author's Reply We appreciate Dr. Michalski's comments on our study describing the use of quantitative EIA reactivity in predicting HIV seropositivity by Western blot. We agree that the relationship between HIV antibody titer and absorbance is not directly linear, as demonstrated by George (1). Furthermore, one cannot define a true quantitative relationship between a screening test which generates continuous numerical data (HIV EIA) and a confirmatory test with a categorical interpretation (HIV Western blot). However, there is a generally direct relationship between EIA absorbance and HIV antibody titer as measured by serial dilutions (1), and we have demonstrated that one can make semiquantitative use of these quantitative data to predict HIV Western blot positivity with a high degree of reliability. Given the significant clinical and psychological impact of a positive diagnosis of HIV-1 infection, we do not suggest that our algorithm is currently appropriate for widespread use. We do feel that it is an approach which warrants further evaluation and which may find utility at present in situations such as the selected circumstances we suggested (e.g., epidemiologic surveys, rapid diagnosis, and resource-poor settings).

E test as susceptibility test and epidemiologic tool for evaluation of Neisseria meningitidis isolates.
The E test (AB Biodisk, Solna, Sweden), a new approach developed to test antimicrobial susceptibility, was compared with the agar dilution method for seven-drug antibiogram analysis of Neisseria meningitidis isolates. The overall E-test quantitative accuracy (+/- 1 log2 dilution) was 93% compared with that of agar dilution testing. The E test was then used to perform the susceptibility tests on...
متن کاملReevaluation of the disk diffusion method for sulfonamide susceptibility testing of Neisseria meningitidis.
Lack of correlation between quantitative minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) determinations and disk diffusion susceptibility tests in our laboratory prompted a study to reevaluate the use of the disk diffusion test for sulfonamide susceptibility testing of Neisseria meningitidis. One hundred and sixty-three recent clinical isolates of N. meningitidis were examined for sulfonamide susceptibi...
متن کاملSerogroups and antibiotic susceptibility patterns of Neisseria meningitidis isolated from army recruits in a training camp.
Invasive Neisseria meningitidis infection is rare but carries a high mortality rate. The carriage rate in the normal population is around 10% and can be higher in confined populations. A study on the prevalence of carriage of N. meningitidis was conducted among 3195 army recruits after 2 months of intensive training in an army camp. N. meningitidis was isolated from 37.0% of these recruits. Two...

We evaluated a monoclonal fluorescent-antibody (FA) reagent (Neisseria gonorrhoeae Culture Confirmation Test; Syva Co., Palo Alto, Calif.) for confirmation of N. gonorrhoeae isolates obtained from clinics for sexually transmitted diseases in four cities. The FA test was performed in parallel with established confirmation procedures on all organisms growing on 773 primary culture plates of modif...
متن کاملPrevalence of Neisseria meningitidis Carriage with Identification of Serogroups and Genogroups in Professional Soldiers.
The article presents the prevalence of Neisseria meningitidis carriage with the identification of sero- and genogroups in professional soldiers serving in the Polish Armed Forces. A total of 1246 soldiers from the 10th Armored Cavalry Brigade in Świętoszów, Poland were examined in the period January-February 2016. Microbiological tests were performed using standard methods (culture, incubation,...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Phadebact Gonococcus Test in the identification of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in a routine diagnostic laboratory.
The Phadebact Gonococcus Test, a coagglutination procedure for the confirmation of identity of presumptive N gonorrhoeae isolates, was evaluated under normal working conditions in a routine diagnostic laboratory and compared with an immunofluorescence technique. Of 166 isolates of N gonorrhoeae from urogenital, rectal, and pharyngeal sites, 164 gave a positive coagglutination reaction, and one ...
